How to Fix Credit Scores Yourself

I’m going to tell you a little story. I want to tell you how I fixed my credit score because I know a lot of people out there are walking around with bad credit and thinking they will be stuck with that score for the rest of their lives. Well it’s not that bad. There are several steps I took when my score was well below 600, and now I can honestly say I have a great score, I’m offered great loans with low interest rates, and I’m not worried about owing debt in the future because I now know how to get out of debt. Here’s what you can do about it.
  • Get organized with your finances. Sounds cliché, but its true. You need to have a very clear understanding of what you owe and how you can pay for it.
  • Start paying off those credit cards. Again, this sounds obvious, but I will explain why this is so important specifically to a score.
  • Hire some help if you need it. There are great companies that know how to fix your credit score fast.
Your own plan to get out of debt!
So the first thing you absolutely have to do is become financially organized. It’s possible you had bad luck with your finances in the past, but I’d also be willing to bet that like me, many of you just didn’t know how to handle your money. Personally I was a disorganized young man who misplaced or forgot to pay bills, spent recklessly on credit cards and worked pay check to pay check. I had to change my lifestyle.

I got all of my bills together and laid them out on a table next to my pay stubs over the previous year. I calculated an approximate estimate of what I was probably going to make in the coming year and what I could realistically devote to my debt. On a calendar I set goals to achieve by certain dates based on this collected information. I think this is a plan that you can try as well. Watching and keeping track of how I was doing on a calendar really helped to motivate me to keep going.

Pay off those credit cards
One of my top goals was to get out of credit card debt. There were several tricks to this that I pulled off. First I consolidated my accounts onto one card. The credit companies allowed me to move an account I had with high interest rates onto a credit account with lower interest rates. They may allow you to do the same. This made it much easier for me to pay more than the minimum month to month. This is the key. If you can pay your bills on time, and pay more than the minimum each month, not only will your debt decrease, but you will rebuild your credit score* quickly.

Facts about Repair Credit Companies

Everyone is looking to save money in the current economy, but you want to be careful about hiring bad credit repair services. Conducting research is essential and working closely with the company you choose is also very important. Never leave credit repair solely in the hands of a third party—be there to oversee everything step by step.

Researching Credit Repair Providers

While you can certainly perform credit repair on your own with just some training, not everyone is interested in taking the time necessary to do that. It seems much easier to hire one of the repair credit companies, and there is certainly nothing wrong with this as long as you take the time to conduct some research. Don’t make the mistake a friend of mine did and be taken in by a lot of promises the company had no intention of keeping. In the end my friend lost tons of money and had nothing to show for it. Some of the things you want to be sure of before contract with any repair company include:

  • How long has the company been in business?
  • How does the fee compare to other companies in the same area?
  • Is the company willing to work right along with you and do things as you direct?
  • What kind of reputation does the company have?
  • What are the terms of service as outlined in a written contract or proposal?
  • Does the company provide a guarantee?
  • Do you feel comfortable working with that particular company?

The Process of Credit Repair

Credit repair is not a simple process; there are several ways to repair bad credit. In most cases the process involves assessing your credit report for inaccurate information. Once you have evaluated the inaccurate information you want to contact the reporting agency and advise them of the problem with each inaccuracy. You may also discover entries that should have been purged or have been entered by both creditors and collection agencies. Once all this information has been assessed and reported you can move on to credit repair which may begin with paying off old debts that still show on your credit history.

Rebuilding Credit

The quickest way to rebuild credit is applying for a credit card. You may discover you have to begin with a secured credit card, and if that is the case you need to make sure the card issuer reports to the major credit reporting agencies. Do not get stung by one of those online credit cards that make a lot of promises; not only are the interest rates very high, but you cannot use them in a regular store. Hold out for a major credit card even if you do have to put money on the card or in a savings account.
